Da superf&amp;iacute;cie terrestre para o interior, o aqu&amp;iacute;fero divide-se em:&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;strong&gt;&lt;font color=&quot;#ff9900&quot;&gt;- Zona de aera&amp;ccedil;&amp;atilde;o:&lt;/font&gt;&lt;/strong&gt; &amp;eacute; a zona mais superficial de um aqu&amp;iacute;fero, que tem como limite superior a superf&amp;iacute;cie do terreno e como limite inferior o n&amp;iacute;vel a partir do qual aparece a &amp;aacute;gua (n&amp;iacute;vel fre&amp;aacute;tico ou hidroest&amp;aacute;tico). &amp;Eacute;, geralmente, nesta zona que as plantas, atrav&amp;eacute;s das ra&amp;iacute;zes, v&amp;atilde;o buscar a &amp;aacute;gua que necessitam para o seu metabolismo. Os poros existentes nos solos e nas rochas n&amp;atilde;o se encontram totalmente preenchidos por &amp;aacute;gua, uma vez que tamb&amp;eacute;m podem conter ar; da&amp;iacute; a designa&amp;ccedil;&amp;atilde;o de zona de area&amp;ccedil;&amp;atilde;o.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;font color=&quot;#ff9900&quot;&gt;&lt;strong&gt;- Zona de satura&amp;ccedil;&amp;atilde;o:&lt;/strong&gt;&lt;/font&gt; come&amp;ccedil;a onde acaba a zona de aera&amp;ccedil;&amp;atilde;o, isto &amp;eacute;, no n&amp;iacute;vel hidroest&amp;aacute;tico (limite superior). O seu limite inferior nem sempre &amp;eacute; de f&amp;aacute;cil defini&amp;ccedil;&amp;atilde;o. Normalmente, o limite inferior da zona de satura&amp;ccedil;&amp;atilde;o corresponde a uma forma&amp;ccedil;&amp;atilde;o geol&amp;oacute;gica imperme&amp;aacute;vel e de porosidade muito reduzido ou mesmo nula, pelo que a &amp;aacute;gua n&amp;atilde;o consegue atravessar esta zona.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Os poros existentes nesta zona encontram-se totalmente preenchidos por &amp;aacute;gua; da&amp;iacute; a &lt;font color=&quot;#000000&quot;&gt;designa&amp;ccedil;&amp;atilde;o que lhe &amp;eacute; atribu&amp;iacute;da &amp;ndash; zona de satura&amp;ccedil;&amp;atilde;o.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/font&gt;&lt;font color=&quot;#ff9900&quot;&gt;&lt;strong&gt;- N&amp;iacute;vel hidroest&amp;aacute;tico:&lt;/strong&gt;&lt;/font&gt; corresponde &amp;agrave; profundidade a que a &amp;aacute;gua se encontra numa determinada regi&amp;atilde;o. Estas subst&amp;acirc;ncias provocam a altera&amp;ccedil;&amp;atilde;o das propriedades f&amp;iacute;sicas e biol&amp;oacute;gicas da &amp;aacute;gua, tornando-a impr&amp;oacute;pria para muitas das suas utiliza&amp;ccedil;&amp;otilde;es.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;strong&gt;&lt;u&gt;&lt;font color=&quot;#99cc00&quot;&gt;Polui&amp;ccedil;&amp;atilde;o bacteriol&amp;oacute;gica:&lt;/font&gt;&lt;/u&gt;&lt;/strong&gt; quando subst&amp;acirc;ncias t&amp;oacute;xicas ou organismos patog&amp;eacute;nicos aparecem na &amp;aacute;gua, tornando-a impr&amp;oacute;pria para consumo e para as utiliza&amp;ccedil;&amp;otilde;es dom&amp;eacute;sticas. De uma maneira geral, a polui&amp;ccedil;&amp;atilde;o que afecta as &amp;aacute;guas subterr&amp;acirc;neas &amp;eacute; causada pelas diferentes actividades do Homem. &lt;font color=&quot;#333333&quot;&gt;Assim, a polui&amp;ccedil;&amp;atilde;o das &amp;aacute;guas &lt;/font&gt;&lt;font color=&quot;#333333&quot;&gt;pode ser dos seguintes tipos:&lt;/font&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;font color=&quot;#0000ff&quot;&gt;- Polui&amp;ccedil;&amp;atilde;o de origem agr&amp;iacute;cola:&lt;/font&gt; a agricultura, quando de car&amp;aacute;cter intensivo, utiliza grandes quantidades de adubos, pesticidas e outras substancias capazes de fazerem aumentar a produ&amp;ccedil;&amp;atilde;o. Estes produtos possuem subst&amp;acirc;ncias perigosas, algumas t&amp;oacute;xicas, tais como nitratos, fosfatos e mesmo metais pesados. A assimila&amp;ccedil;&amp;atilde;o destes produtos, por parte das plantas, nunca &amp;eacute; total, os n&amp;atilde;o assimilados acabam por ser arrastados pelas &amp;aacute;guas das chuvas at&amp;eacute; aos aqu&amp;iacute;feros, poluindo-os. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;A agropecu&amp;aacute;ria, dentro da polui&amp;ccedil;&amp;atilde;o agr&amp;iacute;cola, constitui tamb&amp;eacute;m uma importante fonte poluidora. Os res&amp;iacute;duos de natureza org&amp;acirc;nica, produzidos pelos animais, s&amp;atilde;o utilizados como fertilizantes (estrumes) e s&amp;atilde;o lan&amp;ccedil;ados directamente sobre os terrenos agr&amp;iacute;colas, podendo, desta forma, contaminar os recursos h&amp;iacute;dricos subterr&amp;acirc;neos.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;font color=&quot;#0000ff&quot;&gt;- Polui&amp;ccedil;&amp;atilde;o de origem urbana:&lt;/font&gt; o aumento populacional tem causado enormes problemas de gest&amp;atilde;o dos res&amp;iacute;duos que s&amp;atilde;o produzidos pelo Homem. Os res&amp;iacute;duos, mesmo quando depositados em aterros (ditos sanit&amp;aacute;rios), com o decurso do tempo, sofrem diversas transforma&amp;ccedil;&amp;otilde;es, que originam materiais perigosos para os aqu&amp;iacute;feros. Destes materiais, os mais nocivos s&amp;atilde;o as chamadas &amp;aacute;guas lixiviantes que, caso n&amp;atilde;o sejam convenientemente tratadas, ou caso ocorra uma fuga destas &amp;aacute;guas, poder&amp;atilde;o contaminar, de forma irremedi&amp;aacute;vel, um aqu&amp;iacute;fero.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;font color=&quot;#0000ff&quot;&gt;- Polui&amp;ccedil;&amp;atilde;o de origem industrial:&lt;/font&gt; a actividade industrial, nomeadamente as industrias petroqu&amp;iacute;mica, metal&amp;uacute;rgica e alimentar, produz res&amp;iacute;duos l&amp;iacute;quidos que s&amp;atilde;o lan&amp;ccedil;ados, muitas vezes, nos solos ou nas linhas de &amp;aacute;gua, sem qualquer tipo de tratamento. As subst&amp;acirc;ncias poluidoras (metais pesados, produtos org&amp;acirc;nicos e outras) geradas por estas actividades s&amp;atilde;o, em alguns pontos do nosso pa&amp;iacute;s, respons&amp;aacute;veis pelo estado de degrada&amp;ccedil;&amp;atilde;o em que se encontram alguns aqu&amp;iacute;feros.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;A sobreexplora&amp;ccedil;&amp;atilde;o de um aqu&amp;iacute;fero pode, tamb&amp;eacute;m, provocar a sua polui&amp;ccedil;&amp;atilde;o. Retirar mais &amp;aacute;gua do que aquele que os aqu&amp;iacute;feros s&amp;atilde;o capazes de produzir pode provocar altera&amp;ccedil;&amp;otilde;es qu&amp;iacute;micas ou bacteriol&amp;oacute;gicas, que os tornam impr&amp;oacute;prios para consumo. Os casos de sobreexplora&amp;ccedil;&amp;atilde;o mais t&amp;iacute;picos s&amp;atilde;o os que ocorrem nas zonas costeiras. Assim, se determinado aqu&amp;iacute;fero, localizado no litoral, for explorado em excesso, a diminui&amp;ccedil;&amp;atilde;o da quantidade de &amp;aacute;gua doce possibilita o avan&amp;ccedil;o da &amp;aacute;gua salgada subterr&amp;acirc;nea em direc&amp;ccedil;&amp;atilde;o ao continente, acabando por atingir as capta&amp;ccedil;&amp;otilde;es que se localizam mais pr&amp;oacute;ximo do mar.
